Connect the Learning

This is the last of four lessons based on exploring different kinds of government at local, central and European levels. If you have previously run the other lessons in the Citizenship Politics module, this is a useful assessment opportunity for students. If you are using this lesson independently of the rest of the module, it will make a useful benchmarking exercise to assess the level of student knowledge on this topic.

The Big Picture

There are many different sorts of government. Local and central government and the European parliament affect our lives in different ways and to differing extents. In this session we will look at what kind of issues are dealt with by the various organisations.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn about the work of government, the importance of playing an active part in democratic processes, opportunities for individuals and social groups to bring about change and the UK’s relations in the European Union.

Introduction

Initially the students will need to be reminded of the three different sorts of government covered in the Citizenship Politics module – local government, central government and the European parliament. Use the PowerPoint presentation which accompanies this lesson to jog their memories as a discussion point.

In this session students will draw on their knowledge of local, central and European forms of government. This exercise is a natural culmination to the 3 previous lesson plans in Citizenship – Politics. Explain to the students that they will be competing in teams to find out who remembers the most about the kind of issues that are dealt with in different sorts of government.
