Connect the Learning

Relate learning to any previous work done on society, health and development activities.

The Big Picture

This lesson will concentrate specifically on careers within the health sector looking at both physical health and mental health, using case studies of a physiotherapist and a psychologist as case studies.

Learning Outcomes

This lesson contributes to society, health and development level 2:- Units 2, 5, 8 and 9

Introduction

Preparation – order or download some free leaflets from the NHS http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/downloads.shtml on becoming a physiotherapist and psychotherapist and other related occupations you feel will be relevant after the class. Hand them out to the class to read.

Ask students to read the case studies ‘A day in the life of ...’ which give an overview of a typical day in each of the professions.

Prompt students to consider what the most positive and negative aspects of the roles may include. What sort of skills do they think they would need to train to be one of these roles? Encourage them to think about numeracy, literacy and ICT and other skills they pick up within the classroom. How important are they?
