Smoking Assembly Plan

This assembly on National No Smoking Day aims to raise awareness of the damaging effects that smoking has on the individual and wider society. It can be used in conjunction with the subject of PSHE and some of the topics that are studied within it.

Students are welcomed into the assembly with an appropriate song for the topic. This will engage the students from the very start of the smoking assembly. No Smoking Day is highlighted as a very important day in the year, as it helps thousands of people give up smoking. The campaign’s main aims are made aware of and those are shown in the PowerPoint presentation which is available for teachers. The assembly script informs the students that the assembly will focus on key health messages, to give the students the most information possible if they are thinking of taking up, or quitting, smoking.

The presentation that is included in the teaching resource engages the students by bullet-pointing key facts and statistics, along with images to focus and help the students when they read them. The assembly then goes on to indicate the positive impact that quitting smoking has on people, both health-wise and cost-wise. This teacher resource has everything you need to make a confident, informative and engaging assembly.

The Smoking Ban

Accompanying this assembly, is an additional resource which explains to students the smoking ban introduced in 2007. This smoking assembly will raise awareness of the smoking ban and the health risks of passive smoking. More recent legislation about the dispay of tobacco in retailers is also presented along with the consideration of plain packaging of cigarettes.
