Economic Ideas - A Lesson Plan on Money

This teaching resource is the second in a series of four that looks at economic ideas, and can be linked with other topics in both Enterprise and Work Related Learning subjects. By including a PowerPoint presentation that helps emphasise certain points, and a basic outline for teachers to work from, everything is provided to deliver a thoughtful and informative lesson.

Beginning with an engaging teacher led discussion, students will be encouraged to think about how money works, and the idea that it is a development from trade is introduced. The lesson plan then looks at the PowerPoint presentation, which goes through the history of money, beginning with the use of beads and shells as currency before ancient civilisation invented coins. The lesson then engages students to consider the impact of money and the way it runs our lives today.

By including individual work, paired work and group work, this lesson plan is diverse and thoughtful enough to reach out to all students, as well as implementing some creative work where pupils will design their own coin. For the rest of the lessons on economic ideas, see the Enterprise or Work Related Learning sections on our website.
