Local Action - Citizenship Teaching Resource

This lesson consists of 2 group activities. Below is an introduction to the resource.

Connect the Learning

This is the first in three lessons which are focused on students taking local action to improve their community.

The Big Picture

In this lesson plan the students will be introduced to the “Big Society” agenda, in particular the “National Citizen Service”, and how it may affect their lives. It involves them thinking creatively to come up with a way of improving community provision for young people.

Learning Outcomes

Students understand the importance of playing a part in democratic processes, they will express and justify their own opinions to the rest of the class, and consider taking part in a community activity.

Introduction

The class are split into equal groups and research the ‘Big Society’ and the ‘National Citizen Service for 16 year olds’.

Handout copies of the student information sheets attached.

Ask the students to read and feedback key points of this page. If time permits, also allow students to research further the aims of the government citizenship programmes.

Draw their attention in particular to the youth involvement elements. Have any members of the class taken part in this or something similar? Had they considered becoming involved?.
