Introduction

In this workbook you take responsibility for planning and implementing a community involvement project in your local community or school. You will probably work as part of a team and take on a number of roles and responsibilities, including some aspects of leadership.

What will you learn?

You will learn something about yourself, your likes, your dislikes, the kind of person you are, your ability to work in a team, your ability to be self-reliant, your drive and self-motivation. You will discover what ‘active citizenship’ means.

Why are you doing this?

You are building upon the knowledge, skills and understanding that you have developed in previous work.

You are going to:
Increase the amount of responsibility you take on and therefore become less reliant on adults
Evaluate your own performance and consider the impact you as a person can have on the lives of others around you in the local community or school
Develop new skills of organising an event or activity, the planning and preparation necessary to ensure you deliver the outcomes and of considering the resources you may need

But, what’s in it for me?

The benefits to your CV and future career planning through knowing yourself better are two very prominent benefits. You will also develop skills; an improvement in your personal, technical and transferable skills can all be achieved.

Remember the saying, ‘you get out of an activity what you put in’. It’s the same with active citizenship. You will get a real sense of pride, respect, fun, achievement as well as increasing your skills, understanding and knowledge. The important question is probably not what’s in it for me but what’s in it for them? A famous American president, J F Kennedy once said, ‘Ask not what can your country can do for you but what you can do for your country’
