Images from the Media - Citizenship Activities

This resource is a collection of three twenty-minute activities, used to explore one aspect of media: images. Images are one of the most important tools in the media industry today, and are often used for damning and damaging outcomes. But do they always tell the truth?

Using various ways to engage the students, this Key Stage 4 resource helps different types of student to learn in different ways, using practical exercises such as freeze frames and then studying photographs. The mini lessons progress forward and reflect backwards with one another, going on to explore the captions that accompany photos and how they change or influence people’s perceptions.

Students will learn how to interpret different images they see in the media and to not take things on face value. With these form time lesson plans they will also develop their own view of the media and how it affects the general public.

These resources for Key Stage 4 can be linked to a wider topic on the media, see our [Citizenship teaching resources](/lessons/citizenship/) for more media-orientated lesson plans.
