World Smile Day Assembly

This assembly for World Smile Day is designed for teachers looking to encourage students to smile in their everyday lives and to be more positive, by looking at the annual event of World Smile Day. The assembly resources contain a script for teachers and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation, to emphasise points and provide visuals.

The assembly makes use of an appropriate song to welcome students during their entrance. The idea of smiling is presented through the concept of people watching, by engaging the students to think of what every human has in common, such as sadness, fear, and happiness – leading nicely to the smile! A poem that describes what a smile can mean is then shown to the students, or read by them, further engaging them and their minds to consider happiness and smiling. Again the assembly plan moves smoothly from the poem into the smiley face, an iconic symbol in today’s world. The creator of the smiley face is introduced to students, along with what he believes it signifies and stands for. The actual event of World Smile Day, and when it began, is then described to students in the assembly.

The assembly resource encourages students to commit an act of kindness, wherever that might be, to spread the happiness that World Smile Day tries to achieve. Quotes from the smiley face’s creator, Harvey Ball, are given, and the assembly plan ends with another relatable song. The assembly should leave students reflective of their lives, and how they can make people happy, as well as encouraging them to smile!
