International Day of Peace

The UN International Day of Peace is held on the 21st September.

What do we mean by “peace”? Is world peace a realistic goal? In this assembly plan students look at Gandhi as an example of someone who dedicated their lives to having peace in their country.

This assembly plan is designed for teachers looking to inform students about the aims of International Day of Peace and to help encourage them to reflect on the concept of peace. The assembly resource can be used in conjunction with some topics in PSHE and Citizenship, and includes a script for teachers and a PowerPoint presentation.

International Day of Peace Assembly

The assembly begins by playing a relevant song by a well-known artist, before outlining the role of the United Nations and what they do to promote peace. The assembly resource makes use of the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi, using what he did during his life to explain to the students how one person can make a difference. The assembly goes through what Gandhi did during his life, ending with his unfortunate assassination, and the materials provide facts and quotes from him from throughout his life.

The assembly plan finishes with an extract from the United Nations Charter, serving as a ‘thought for the day.’ This is to conclude the assembly and encourage students to leave the assembly in a reflective mood, and with more understanding on the subject of peace.
