Writing a Cover Letter Lesson

This is the second lesson of four which looks at the job application process. This lesson explores how students should write a cover letter.

The Learning Outcomes

In this session students will be provided with the opportunity to practise writing a covering letter.

Introduction

Write the topic on the board. Elicit responses from students to the following questions:

- What is a covering letter?
- Who is a covering letter for?
- Who writes a covering letter?
- What would you normally enclose with a covering letter?

Write up their responses on the board, which should include the fact that a covering letter or ‘cover letter’ should accompany a CV when applying for jobs or work placements and that the letter should do the following things:

- Explain who you are and why you’re writing
- Sell yourself and your skills effectively
- Express your enthusiasm for the job
- Make a promise of follow up action
