Economic Ideas - A Lesson Plan on Tax

This lesson plan is the last in a series of four that looks at economic ideas, which can link to topics in both Enterprise and Work Related Learning. This teaching resource introduces the concept of tax, and the different ways in which tax is implemented. The resources provided include a PowerPoint presentation that links with the teacher outline to help the students learn in different ways.

The lesson begins by thinking of the different kinds of tax that are in use today, and the students are encouraged to explore what they already know on the subject. The teaching resource makes use of the PowerPoint presentation to help teach the students about wage slips, and the different taxes and working out gross and net income. Students are then given the opportunity to try and work out their own fictional wage on a blank wage slip, either in groups or individually.

By using the visual implement of the PowerPoint, and the practical exercises the students can do, this teaching resource reaches out to many different types of learner and tries to be as inclusive as possible. The students finish off the lesson by looking back over the topic and reviewing what they have learnt.
