Connect the Learning

Introduce the students to the concept of earning a wage. At key stage 3 they may be too young to have any experience of waged work, but this is the time to introduce them to the concept . Connect the subject to any previous careers or work-related learning topics covered to date.

The Big Picture

As part of the key stage 3 programme of study for work-related learning:

Key concepts:
Understanding the way business and the economy operates
Knowing and understanding the nature of money, and having an insight into its functions and uses.

Key processes:
Pupils should be able to manage their money
Explain some financial terms likely to be important in their personal and working lives.

Learning outcomes

This lesson follows on from the previous one in which students were introduced to the laws that govern young people and work. In this lesson they will be studying an example of the local authority byelaws that govern the employment of children. If you have time you may want to source the byelaws created by your local authority which should be available online or on request. The example used in this lesson is fairly typical however.

Introduction

Remind the students of the last lesson, where they learnt about the law governing young people and work. Explain that while central government legislates for students aged 14 and over, local government creates byelaws for local issues, including the employment of young people who are younger than 14. For this lesson it may be useful to have pages from a newspaper jobs section to use as guidance. Give the students materials to help them to create job adverts – sugar paper, marker pens, magazines for cutting, glue sticks, scissors, or if resources permit, let them design it on a computer.
