Connect the Learning

In the last lesson we looked at child labour in the UK in the past, and how children work in developing countries now. Today we will be learning about the kinds of work that young people can do during key stage 3 and 4, and the laws that regulate the work that they do.

The Big Picture

This is lesson 2 of 4 in a module about work and wages.

Learning outcomes

As part of the key stage 3 programme of study for work-related learning:

Key concepts:
Understanding the way business and the economy operates
Knowing and understanding the nature of money, and having an insight into its functions and uses.

Key processes:
Pupils should be able to manage their money
Explain some financial terms likely to be important in their personal and working lives.

Introduction

Remind the students of the last lesson, where they learnt about the kind of work that was done by children during the last two hundred years.
Ask them if they remember the “train of thought” that was created, which featured keywords and ideas about children and work.
Working in five groups, the students will create a radio news bulletin announcing the key points of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933.
Distribute the task sheets to each group.
Make sure each member of the group knows they will be making a contribution.
If you have the resources available, prepare a video or audio recording for the demonstration.
