Connect the Learning

Introduce the students to the concept of earning a wage. At key stage 3 they may be too young to have any experience of waged work, but this is the time to introduce them to the concept. Connect the subject to any previous careers or work-related learning topics covered to date.

The Big Picture

As part of the key stage 3 programme of study for work-related learning:

Key concepts:
Understanding the way business and the economy operates
Knowing and understanding the nature of money, and having an insight into its functions and uses.

Key processes:
Pupils should be able to manage their money
Explain some financial terms likely to be important in their personal and working lives.

Learning Outcomes

Students understand about starting work, what work is available to them before school leaving age, and what their rights are.

Introduction

Establish how many of the students already work (whether it is babysitting or a paper round) or if they have friends or siblings who work. What hours do they work? How much do they get paid? This exercise is to find out how much the class knows about work at the moment.
