About the Role of the Media Lesson Plan

This lesson begins by looking at some media headlines and gets students to categorise them dependent upon the viewpoint of the journalist. The lesson then asks students to carry out a role playing exercise where some students can experience the role of a journalist when developing a story. This will then give you the opportunity to develop a classroom newspaper which can be used for display and can be used to reinforce the lessons learnt.

Aims

The lesson aims to give your students an understanding of how the media portrays cannabis and mental health. Through the lesson students will be able to creatively look through the eyes of journalists and see how stories are written. As well as giving students an appreciation of how the media portray issues it will also give them an idea on how stories are created and reported. It will show them how stories are an expression of someone’s opinion and views, and how these may differ from person to person.
