Connect the Learning

Teacher Input - This is lesson 2 of 4 on the topic of Diversity as part of the PSHE and Citizenship programme.

The Big Picture

Teacher input - The curriculum aims for the PSHE: Personal Wellbeing programme of study include young people becoming “responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.” The requirement is for the issues of diversity and prejudice to be tackled at KS3.

Learning Outcomes

From the key stage 3 PSHE: Personal Wellbeing programme of study;

a Appreciating that, in our communities, there are similarities as well as differences between people of different race, religion, culture, ability or disability, gender, age or sexual orientation.

Introduction

Activity 1: Teacher-led discussion

Throughout history, people have emigrated from and immigrated to the UK.

Ask the students to name some different nationalities, religions and ethnic groups represented in the school. Write them on the board. Explain that people have always moved around the world for various reasons, and in this lesson students will be learning about who came to the UK, when they came to the UK and why.
