Innovation Throughout History Lesson Plan 6 - Does it work?
Looking at prototypes and the importance of modelling for innovative ideas.
Connect the Learning
Recap on the previous lesson which explored design developments.
The Big Picture
This lesson looks at how to decide whether a design idea is good enough or not.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, students will understand how to set realistic evaluation criteria to decide whether to proceed with a development idea.
Introduction
Whole class activity: Display presentation. Discuss with students what types of considerations they need to make about an idea before they decide to develop it. Ask students what they understand about a prototype.
Create a list of reasons why it is important to go through a prototype stage before taking an item into production. Use ‘What if....?’ scenarios about ideas to illustrate the types of testing of ideas that is needed. For example, if a new suitcase is being developed ‘What if the handle was too big for some people to hold?’
