Citizenship Assessment Tool

Assessing students’ knowledge, skills and understanding in citizenship is a challenge. We have devised this assessment tool in conjunction with teachers who know how difficult assessment can be.

This assessment tool is created by the students themselves as a PowerPoint presentation.

The assessment is designed to be returned to over time, so they can add evidence of their skills and understanding throughout the course of year 10 and beyond. It is also designed to be presented to people to show what they have learnt.

There are three evidence headings in this assessment. These are:

-Democracy and Justice
-Rights and Responsibilities
-Identities and Deversity

These headings have been taken from the new programme of study for Citizenship at key stage 4. However, as the presentation is basically a PowerPoint presentation, you can amend or edit the headings and the associated statements to suit your requirements.

Each heading has a number of statements within it which are taken from the programme of study. One or more of these statements may apply to the student. For example, the heading “Rights and responsibilities” includes the statements:

- Exploring different kinds of rights and obligations and how these affect both individuals and communities.
- Understanding that individuals, organisations and governments have responsibilities to ensure that rights are balanced, supported and protected.
- Investigating ways in which rights can compete and conflict, and understanding that hard decisions have to be made to try to balance these.
