Students should understand that it is their responsibility to be aware of what is going on in the world and to understand how easy it is to access this information.
Introduction
Group work – students to consider the advantages and the disadvantages of the more traditional forms of media.
Activity 1
New technology and the changing face of media. Students consider some of the technological changes that have occurred and that have prompted advancement in the methods of media available to us now.
Read through Accompanying PowerPoint – (discuss slides 1-6).
Activity 2
You will need internet access for this activity. Allocate each group a news website -

- www.thesun.co.uk,
- www.timesonline.co.uk
- www.independent.co.uk
- www.reuters.co.uk
- www.guardian.co.uk
- www.dailystar.co.uk
There is a list available on slide 7 of TRU_CitizenshipKS4_Media_lesson3.ppt.
Ask them to list all the different kinds of news that they can see, and all the different news formats (video, mobile phone bulletins etc) that make online news different to print-based news.
