Connect the Learning

This lesson is the second of four lessons on different sorts of government – local, central and the European parliament.

The politics lessons can be linked to each other, or used individually with a little adaptation.

The Big Picture

Government is a complicated and dry subject for students to absorb. In this lesson we use a PowerPoint presentation followed by a role playing game and voting exercise to keep them engaged and active.

Activities

Broken down into 2 activities, students first begin to understand the different government departments and their responsibilities. In the second part of this lesson, students are grouped together to form the own government, elect a Prime Minister and decide which government departments they will include.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn about the work of government and the responsibilities of government departments, the importance of playing a part in the democratic process, and will need to express, justify and defend personal opinions.
