Local Action Lesson Plan 3 - Using Your Local Council

Students refine the presentation they created in lesson 1 to create something professional enough to send to their local council. Working in groups, students complete the module by learning how to approach the local council with their suggestion. A letter template that students can follow is included with this citizenship lesson plan.

Connect the Learning

This is the third of three lessons which are focused on students taking local action to improve their community.

The Big Picture

In this lesson students will understand that they are able to communicate their ideas and requests to their local council.

Learning Outcomes

Students understand the work of government and the importance of playing a part in democratic processes. They will express and justify their own opinions to the rest of the class, and consider taking part in a community activity.

Introduction

Students research relevant contact information online or in directories.

Working in their groups from the first two Local Action lessons, students need to research information about their local authority. They can do this by going to www.direct.gov.uk and finding the “Local Councils” directory section, or by using a copy of the Yellow Pages.

The website of the local council will have a section dedicated to children or young people’s activities, often under a “learning and leisure” heading. This is the address which the students need to find, along with a contact name if possible.

Activity

Using the presentation which the students created in the first Local Action lesson, they should refine it so that they have something which they are happy to send through to their local council.
