Volunteering Abroad Assembly

This lesson plan is the last in a series of four that looks at volunteering. This Citizenship teaching resource looks at volunteering abroad and introduces the idea of a gap year to students. The teacher plan and accompanying PowerPoint presentation both outline key points and will provide a thorough, well-structured lesson to students. The lesson plan looks at different things within a gap year, such as where to go in the world, and when to take a gap year, before focusing on what volunteer opportunities are available when taking one.

The examples of Prince William and Prince Harry are given as what people can achieve on a gap year, and it is conveyed to the students that they do not need to be rich to undertake one. This leads on to the concept of fundraising to pay for a volunteer abroad placement, and the key skills and personal enhancements are discussed. If your students are considering taking a gap year, there are more gap year lessons in our careers section.
