Health & Safety - Signs & Symbols Lesson Plan

Safety at work is an important issue for any industry. Future employers will be responsible for setting up safe ways of working and students will be responsible for knowing the rules and carrying them out. In the business world, much of this information on health and safety is in the form of signs and symbols.

Activities

This lesson is broken down into a series of activities supported by a PowerPoint presentation. Students will begin by being introduced the the 5 main types of safety sign; mandatory, warning, prohibitive, general and fire. These are then explained and discussed before students think about the type of sign they expect to find on work placement, college, university or new job. The lesson is concluded by a signs quiz, which will test students understanding of the types of sign as well as their ability to interpret their meanings.

Lesson Outcomes

By the end of this session, students will have learnt the key concepts relating to health and safety, signs and symbols. They will also have learnt how to recognise the different types of warning sign and what they mean.
