Connect the Learning

Teacher Input - During your studies you have developed a number of skills which are called ‘functional skills’. The main functional skills are communication and literacy skills, mathematics and ICT. Functional skills are about applying English, maths and ICT in real life and work contexts.

The Big Picture

Teacher Input - This topic is divided into two sessions. In the first session you will be identifying what the functional skills are and the applications they have.

In the second session we will be considering how you can apply these skills in the context of your diploma studies

Learning Outcomes

By the end of these sessions you will be able to:-

Give examples for each of the three main functional skills

Provide specific examples of how these skills can be applied in the context of your studies

Introduction

Have sufficient copies of the cards pre-cut out from accompanying Functional Skills Cards document

Teacher input: Use PowerPoint slide 2 to introduce to students the meaning and importance of ‘functional skills’.

Task 1: Card sort – In pairs or small groups students sort the definitions and examples of tasks under the appropriate functional skill heading. Class discussion – can some of the tasks be put under more than one heading? Can the students think of other examples of these functional skills? - If so add to blank cards.
