Connect the Learning

In the last lesson we looked at laws relating to the employment of young people. Do you know whether you could go out and get a part time job today? In the last lesson you were asked to consider a scenario and whether it was legal – today we will be looking in more detail at local bylaws relating to the employment of young people.

The Big Picture

As part of the key stage 3 programme of study for work-related learning and economic wellbeing this is lesson 2 of 4 on the topic of work and wages. This lesson follows on from the previous one in which students were introduced to the laws that govern young people and work.

Learning Outcomes

As part of the key stage 3 programme of study for work-related learning:

Key concepts:

- Understanding the way business and the economy operates
- Knowing and understanding the nature of money, and having an insight into its functions and uses.

Introduction

Teacher input - Run the Powerpoint presentation TRU_WRLKS3_Work_L2 from the previous lesson. Go through each slide and its answers with the class.

Remind the students of the last lesson, where they learnt about the law governing young people and work.

Explain that while central government legislates for students aged 14 and over, local government creates byelaws for local issues, including the employment of young people who are younger than 14.

For this lesson it may be useful to have pages from a newspaper jobs section to use as guidance.
