About the Year 9 Options Programme Lesson Plan

The Year 9 Options Programme lesson gives student’s the first glimpse of how their education can be shaped to influence their lives. The lesson has been designed to be split between a teacher-led discussion and an activity to engage students’. At the start of the lesson it is an opportunity for teachers to discuss the core curriculum subjects and explain why they are compulsory and necessary for students. Teachers then go on to explain about subject options and make students aware that options need to be chosen soon. There is an activity included in the teaching material which gives students the opportunity to start thinking about the skills required to carry out certain jobs. They then need to reflect on their own skills and think about how their skills and abilities relate to the different option subjects.

Aims

The aim of this lesson plan is to get students to start thinking about subject options and reflect on their own skills. The lesson wants to get students focused on understanding that they have the ability to shape their education with these choices and that careful deliberation is required to make the right decision for them.

Learning Outcomes

The main learning outcomes from this lesson plan include a student’s ability to: • Understand why core curriculum subjects are compulsory and necessary • Understand the subject options available • Appreciate the skills and abilities that they have By using the Year 9 Options Programme lesson plan teachers are able to get students to start thinking about their future and get them to actively engage in their own education.
