World Poverty

Raise awareness of the issue of poverty, both in terms of absolute poverty in developing countries, and relative poverty in western countries. Use this assembly to remind students of the need in developing countries to act against poverty, and the fact that in the UK, 22% of the population are living below the low income threshold.

World Poverty Assembly

This assembly about world poverty is to inform students about how the lives of people in some countries are desperately poor, and the social issues that poverty creates.

The assembly plan explores what poverty means, and invites students to posit their own ideas on the subject. The resource then goes on to define the two types of poverty, absolute poverty and relative poverty, and helping pupils to identify each one. Images are used in an accompanying PowerPoint presentation to aid students who learn better visually, and helps engage students with key points and facts. The presentation also includes a poem about poverty, and looks at the poverty in the UK as well as in underdeveloped countries in Africa and elsewhere in the world. There are some eye-opening facts and figures that will really make the children think about how lucky they are, and raise awareness of poverty.

The resource finishes with a quote from Aristotle that sums up the subjects covered in the assembly on poverty, and the students will leave the assembly reflective of some of the hardships that children can go through across the world, including right here in the UK.
