Britishness Assembly Plan

What do we think Britishness is? What makes us British (or not)? This assembly explores ideas around Britishness and includes a quick quiz ideal for the end of term. In this assembly students are introduced to Britishness in terms of diversity and tolerance rather than food or culture. One slide illustrates how Britain has throughout history been a destination for immigrants. The quiz uses questions taken from the Home Office test for knowledge of British culture, “Life in the UK” as a starter for thinking about what “Britishness” is.

Britishness Assembly

This assembly on Britishness aims to inform students about what it means to be British and encourages a positive attitude towards the image of Britain. The assembly resource makes use of images on a PowerPoint presentation to engage the students and help different types of learner.

The images that are used to start off the assembly include London, cricket and a British Passport, which relate to how some people will view Britain. In contrast to this some more pictures are used to show negative thoughts people have about foreign countries, leading to what other countries might think of Britain in a negative way. This secondary assembly plan then looks at the history of Britain, and the diverse cultures that came together in historical times to form the foundations of our society as we know it today. The ideas of a ‘Smart Britain’ and a ‘Justice Britain’ are then examined before finishing with a well known song.

The use of different media in the PowerPoint, including quotes from important figures both in and out of Britain, will engage students and encourage them to consider what it means to be British. It also touches on the subjects of PSHE, Citizenship and History throughout the assembly plan.
