UN Day - Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

The 4th of June is a special UN Day for Innocent Children, Victims of Aggression. This assembly plan introduces the issues of child labour and child soldiers. Students participate in this lesson by reading aloud from slides. Some of the quotes are taken from case studies of child soldiers and children who have suffered in wars, and are extremely graphic. If these quotes are not appropriate you can edit this slide. A hard hitting assembly that makes a strong point.

UN Day Assembly

This assembly resource is to inform students about what UN Day is and what its aims are, as well as raising general awareness of the United Nations. The topics covered in this assembly can be linked to PSHE, Citizenship and History, and the teacher materials include an assembly script and accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

The assembly starts off by engaging the students to think about what other children might be suffering from throughout the world at that precise moment; poverty, abuse, child-labour and slavery, all relating to the idea of war and conflict. All these things will make the students sit up and take notice of the assembly topic. This is used to explain what the United Nations do in regards to the rights of children. The assembly script encourages teachers to include the students in reading out some key facts from the PowerPoint about underprivileged children across the world, before using some example quotes from people who were child soldiers in horrible violent conflicts in Africa.

The assembly plan finishes with a meaningful quote, and the whole assembly will teach pupils how to respect one another, as well as trying to eradicate violence. The assembly resource ensures the knowledge of the suffering that goes on in the world and will cause students to reflect on this.
