Volunteers' Week Assembly

Volunteers' week runs from the 1st to the 7th of June. Get your students coming up with volunteering suggestions using this assembly as a starter. This assembly can be linked with an active citizenship scheme of work (take a look at ours in the citizenship section of this site). It introduces students to Volunteers week and encourages them to think of some ideas about how they could get involved with volunteering in their community.

More About the Volunteers' Week Assembly

This assembly resource on Volunteers Week is a great way to introduce students to the idea of volunteer work, and how it could benefit them. It links directly to the Citizenship programme of study and incorporates the government’s Big Society campaign.

The accompanying PowerPoint signals key points in the government’s Big Society programme, including their pledge to pump £40 million into volunteering schemes in two years, to start the assembly off. The assembly script goes on to engage the students by asking them what they would improve about their area, and what kinds of activities might be beneficial for the community if they were organised. To inspire the pupils further, examples of award-winning community projects are given that were created by young people in the UK. The benefits of volunteering on the individual are then provided, before considering the local opportunities that might be available to the students.

The assembly finishes by offering further information for those interested, and the pupils will have learned about all the good things that come from people volunteering all over the country. This teaching resource is a good way of engaging the students and giving them a platform on which to achieve success and experience whilst volunteering.
