Spring Term Assemblies - Easter

This secondary school assembly plan for Easter will inform students of the historical, religious reasons for Easter and how what we do today to celebrate maintains its roots in Biblical times. The accompanying PowerPoint presentation provides images and bullet points to emphasise key points and engage different types of learner across the school.

The introduction to the assembly focuses on the date that Easter falls on, and why it is different from year to year. This takes into account the lunar calendar and its links with Christianity. The period of fasting that Jesus undertook – now known as Lent – is touched upon while informing the students of the build up to Easter. The significance of Ash Wednesday is also explained in this assembly. The assembly script for teachers then runs through each of the other significant dates that all relate to the coming of Easter Sunday, such as Palm Sunday and Good Friday.

The Bible is referred to here, as the assembly tells the story of Jesus’ crucifixion and consequent resurrection. Different symbols of Easter as we know it today are explained, such as the giving of Easter eggs on Easter Sunday. The teacher materials give the reasons for eggs, as they symbolise new life and the boulder that was pushed in front of Jesus’ tomb was that shape.
