Sexism Assembly Plan

An assembly on a careers topic for years 10 and 11 - how can we get away from gender stereotypes in our careers choices? This assembly plan explores gender stereotyping in the workplace and in career choices. From school subject choices through to career options, students need to understand that their gender does not define what jobs they will be able to do.

Sexism Assembly

This secondary assembly about sexism looks at gender stereotypes and how students can overcome them. The teaching resources include an assembly script and a PowerPoint presentation to show to the students.

The assembly plan begins with a quiz relating to jobs. The students have to guess what the job is, and this leads on to the stereotypes of men and women doing certain jobs. Why these stereotypes have come about is then discussed in the assembly, and how to overcome preconceived ideas about students’ options. A detailed analysis of what creates sexism is then provided, noting the role of parents, schools and the media in maintaining sexism and prejudices.

The assembly plan aims to teach students about sexism and that, despite social expectations and stereotypes, no one should be put off from doing something they really want to do. Overcoming sexism is a massive thing as it still occurs in our society, despite ongoing arguments about equality and gender equality.
