Bonfire Night Assembly

This assembly for Bonfire Night is to teach students not only about the dangers and to stay safe on Bonfire Night, but also to look at the historical context in which we celebrate it. The assembly can link to some topics in PSHE and History, and includes a teacher script and PowerPoint presentation.

This assembly resource charts the events of the Gunpowder plot and how they were adapted to the celebrations that we know today. The materials include many images, on display using the presentation, to tell the famous story and provide a more engaging medium for some students to take in the information. As well as the Gunpowder plot, the assembly looks at other people who were affected by the religious divide in the country, such as John Ogilvie who was tortured and hanged, just for being a priest.

The assembly finishes by considering what may have happened had the Gunpowder plot been successful, such as a potential civil war and possible invasions. The assembly resource encourages students to consider the historical relevance of Bonfire Night, and reminds them to have a safe and fun night.
