Peer Pressure Assembly

This assembly plan about peer pressure is designed to raise awareness of peer pressure amongst students, relating to how it works and what problems can arise due to it. However, the assembly also highlights that not all peer pressure is negative. Included are a teacher script and a PowerPoint presentation, both of which are adaptable to suit the audience needs.

After establishing what peer pressure is, this assembly resource looks at why peer pressure is important, highlighting some positive aspects such as encouragement and doing something you wouldn’t try on your own. The idea that peers can motivate hard work in school, and cheering friends up when they are down, are all noted as positive outcomes of peer pressure. The other side, more negative aspects, of peer pressure are then discussed. Having the feeling of wanting to fit in, and doing something you shouldn’t in order to do so, is highlighted in the teacher’s script. Such sensitive topics as sex and relationships are covered, before looking at some ways to deal with peer pressure. Increased self esteem and personal judgement are both given as important aspects to deal with negative peer pressure.

The assembly is a good resource to teach children about both positive and negative points of peer pressure, and the teacher will feel confident in delivering the assembly with the materials at hand. The students will be better prepared for when peer pressure occurs and they will have the knowledge to deal with any situation they encounter.
