Halloween Assembly

This Halloween assembly is for teachers looking to raise awareness of the historical aspects of Halloween. This interesting assembly idea can link to RE and PSHE, and contains a teacher script and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

Apt music greets the students as they enter the assembly, and the idea of where Halloween originated is suggested to the students. They are then informed that the celebration dates back thousands of years, back to pagan times, and the ‘Samhain’ is introduced, the feast of all the saints, a pagan festival that took place on the 31st October to signify the start of winter, and it’s significance is explained. The assembly resource then looks at the origins of costumes, and what they originally symbolised and were used for.

The assembly looks at the traditions that we know well today, and how they came to be, such as pumpkins, trick or treat, and other games that are played. The students will be able to reflect on the beginning of Halloween and have the knowledge of why the things we do today are done. This assembly plan expresses that Halloween isn’t just about sweets and games, and how traditional rituals have been adapted to modern times.
