Diwali Assembly

This assembly on Diwali is for teachers who are looking to raise awareness amongst students about world faiths. The assembly can link to some topics in the RE programme of study, and has cross curricular links regarding diversity.

The Diwali assembly resource begins by stimulating the students with some props, and asking what each of them has in common. From this, the theme of festivals and celebrations is established and Diwali is introduced. It is described as the festival of lights, and what this signifies, as well as the different religions that celebrate it, and where they are from. The celebrations that are explained relate back to the props at the beginning of the assembly, and the assembly script describes what is on the PowerPoint presentation, such as images and symbols to engage the students. The meaning of Diwali is shown, and the celebration of the festival in the UK is suggested to the assembly.

Combining religious beliefs as well as cultural and historical facts and myths, the assembly resource will thoroughly detail the festival of Diwali and engage students to learn about a new world faith.
