New Year - New Start, assembly idea

This New Year’s assembly is a good resource to teach the students about the change that the New Year offers people, and also to reflect on the year that has just passed. The teaching materials include an assembly script and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

The assembly plan begins by asking why people celebrate the New Year, before going on to the different things that people will reflect on and the kind of targets and new goals that can be set with the New Year. The celebrations that take placed are discussed, before the assembly looks at alternative cultures and how they celebrate the New Year. The example of China is given, and the alternative dates of China and other New Year celebrations around the world are given.

The assembly makes a valid point in telling the pupils to make the most of their New Year, and their time in general, and encourages balancing hard work with fun and dreams. The assembly plan can link to some topics in PSHE and Citizenship, and promotes a positive attitude towards the New Year.
