Christmas Assembly

This assembly for Christmas is to raise awareness of the reasons that people celebrate Christmas, and includes not only the Christian perspective of the festival but also pagan traditions. The resources include a script for teachers and a PowerPoint presentation to provide images and emphasise key points.

The assembly plan starts off by encouraging the students to partake in a discussion about what they think about when they think of Christmas. The accompanying PowerPoint displays a number of suggestions to help with the discussion. The teacher then asks the question of what Christmas is really about, and how many of the customs we know today relate to the birth of Christ. The idea of pre-Christian celebrations is put across to the students, with the Christmas tree and Holly and Ivy being traditional pagan winter festival customs, which have been adapted in what we know as Christmas today. Other customs that have been added throughout the centuries include the Advent and Christingle, to show that the customs have gradually been added to what we now know today.

The assembly portrays an important message about Christmas; that no matter what the celebrations mean and what their origins are, Christmas is a celebration time for family and friends, as well as giving hope and happiness to the world. The assembly can be linked to some topics within RE, PSHE and Citizenship.
