Hanukkah Assembly

This assembly for Hanukkah is for teachers looking to teach students about alternative religious festivals, and links to some topics in RE, PSHE and Citizenship. The assembly materials contain an assembly script as well as a PowerPoint presentation to provide images and to engage different types of student learning.

The assembly plan begins with background information leading into the festival, asking the students how much they know about Judaism and giving them key points and information about the religion, which includes the Jewish holy book, the Torah. Before going into detail about Hanukkah, the assembly outlines some of the other important festivals in the Jewish calendar. The assembly then looks at the history and origins of the festival, before describing the different customs such as the food eaten and the traditional games played by families.

The assembly ends with an extract from the Jewish hymn of praise to God, Maoz Tzur, so the pupils get a sense of the Jewish faith. This assembly resource helps students understand other religions, and will engage the students to get involved by use of different media and participation.
