Ramadan Assembly

This assembly on Ramadan is for teachers looking to inform students about the aims of the festival, and the materials include a thorough assembly script with an accompanying PowerPoint presentation. The assembly can be linked to PSHE and Citizenship.

The assembly begins by introducing Ramadan as one of the biggest religious festivals in the world. The religion of Islam is then explained and key facts about the religion are given. The reasons behind fasting are then discussed, telling of how it is a gift to the Muslim God, Allah. The potential benefits are explored, for example the satisfaction of practicing self-discipline and doing something traditional, expressing religious beliefs. It is also explained that fasting for Ramadan is linked to spiritual enlightenment.

The celebrations that occur during Ramadan are then described, and the event at the end of fasting known as the festival of fast breaking. A Ramadan prayer is provided at the end of the PowerPoint, giving the students a feel of the culture and religion of Islam. The students will have more knowledge relating to the concept of world faiths, and the assembly plan also highlights that different groups of people have unique celebrations.
