Climate Change Assembly

The assembly resources for climate change aim to clarify what is meant by climate change and to teach students about the disasters that have occurred, and whether they were caused due to the climate. The teaching resources include an assembly script and a PowerPoint presentation to aid the assembly.

The assembly begins by addressing what climate entails, and in what ways it is different to just ‘weather.’ Once that is established, the idea of whether climate change is actually happening is put forward to the students. The assembly plan then looks at the 2010 Pakistan floods of a possible example of how climate change can affect the world. The PowerPoint presentation contains facts and statistics from the Pakistan floods, as well as a link to a website showing the areas affected by the flood. These visual images will engage the students and emphasise how bad the floods were.

The rest of the assembly looks at other natural disasters in recent years, such as Hurricane Katrina in USA and the Tsunami in Japan, and again asks whether it is climate change that has caused these or just extreme weather. The presentation provides some very powerful images of some of the disasters that have taken place, which will really hit home with the students.

Before the assembly finishes, the students will be aware of what climate change is, the direct and indirect effects it has on the world, as well as what we can do to prevent it and raise awareness. Any rumours that it only occurs in other countries are dispelled with the information on the recent UK floods, to also show that everyone can be affected by climate change.
